Biqi Yangmei (scientific name: Myrica rubra, also known as Chinese bayberry) is one of the famous Yangmei varieties in southern China. It is named for its fruit shape resembling water chestnuts (horse蹄). Here is a detailed introduction about Water Chestnut Yangmei: 
1. Basic Characteristics 
Fruit morphology: The fruits are medium-sized, with an average single fruit weight of approximately 9.5 grams. They are oblong in shape. When ripe, the fruit surface turns dark purple. The pulp is rod-shaped, with a tender and soft texture. The flesh is juicy and sweet with a slight sourness. It contains up to 13% soluble solids and an edible rate of up to 96%. 13 
Tree characteristics: The tree has an open shape, with relatively sparse branches and a short overall height. It is highly adaptable and resistant to wind, as well as diseases such as cancerous spots and brown spot. 16 
2. Place of Origin and Distribution 
Origin: Cixi and Yuyao, Zhejiang Province. It has now been promoted to several provinces in southern China, such as Jiangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Fujian and other places. 15 
Famous production areas: Biqi yangmei produced in places such as Xianju, Cixi, and Dongshan in Suzhou has extremely high quality. Among them, Xianju Biqi yangmei is particularly popular due to its unique flavor. 28 
3. Maturation Time 
Maturity period: Generally available for sale in mid-June, with the harvest period lasting approximately 10 to 15 days. 5 
Growth cycle: Results start to appear 3 to 5 years after planting. The tree reaches its peak fruiting stage in 10 years. Its economic lifespan can last up to 50 years. The yield per tree during the peak fruiting period can reach 50 to 450 kilograms. 
4. Flavor and Eating Method 
Taste: Moderately sweet and sour, with a sugar content of 12%-13% and an acid content of 0.5%-1.1%. It has a unique flavor. 
Usage instructions: 
Fresh food: Can be eaten directly, or can be tasted after being soaked in salt water.
