Product Name: American Sugar Mandarin (Century Red)
Description:
American Sugar Mandarin, also marketed as Century Red or American Red Mandarin, is a premium hybrid citrus variety originating from the United States. It is a cross between a Clementine mandarin lineage and a pomelo, introduced to China in 2001 by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences' Citrus Research Institute through the "948" project. The variety was officially named "American Sugar Mandarin" in 2007. In the international market, it corresponds to the W. Murcott variety.
A Mandarin That Delivers on Every Level:
The defining feature of American Sugar Mandarin is its exceptional sweetness with virtually zero acidity. Soluble solids content ranges from 12.3% to 16.5%, and can exceed 18% in warm southern regions — delivering a pure, candy-like sweetness that is highly appealing to consumers. The flesh is crisp, tender, and melting (化渣) , with a fine, juicy texture that leaves no residue. The fruit is seedless or nearly seedless (2–5 seeds per fruit), making it exceptionally convenient for snacking.
A Visual Standout:
American Sugar Mandarin is instantly recognizable by its striking bright red to purplish-red skin. The surface is extremely smooth with tiny, flat oil cells — a visual quality so superior that it appears waxed, even without any treatment. This appearance far exceeds that of common Nanfeng Mandarin and Sugar Mandarin varieties. The thin, crisp skin is extremely easy to peel, separating cleanly from the flesh.
Key Commercial Advantages:
Superior Eating Quality – High sugar (12.3–16.5% Brix), virtually no acidity, crisp and melting flesh
Striking Red Appearance – Bright red to purplish-red skin, extremely smooth and glossy
Easy to Peel – Thin, crisp skin peels effortlessly
Seedless – 2–5 seeds per fruit for convenient eating
Excellent Storage Life – Stores at room temperature until mid-February without refrigeration; holds on the tree until early December with no puffiness or drying
Strong Disease Resistance – Highly resistant to citrus canker; adult trees show strong resistance to anthracnose
Cold Hardy – Higher mandarin genetic ratio gives it better cold tolerance than most citrus; can be grown successfully in areas with an annual average temperature above 15.5°C
Extremely High Yield – Yields reach 3,000–4,000 kg per mu (6,000–8,000 jin) at full production
Excellent Transport Tolerance – Firm fruit with good hardness, ideal for long-distance shipping and e-commerce
Growing Regions:
American Sugar Mandarin has been successfully introduced and cultivated in Sichuan, Chongqing, Hunan, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Hubei, and Anhui provinces. It performs exceptionally well across these regions, with data showing comprehensive performance exceeding that of Sugar Mandarin and Nanfeng Mandarin, particularly in appearance and sugar content.
Cultivation Notes:
Climate: Suitable for areas with annual average temperature above 15.5°C
Rootstock: Trifoliate orange or citrange are recommended for balanced growth and stable yields; Trifoliate orange may cause over-cropping and biennial bearing — strict fruit thinning is essential
Planting Density: 55–60 trees per mu at 3m × 4m spacing
Soil: Deep, fertile soil with pH 5.5–7.0
Fruit Thinning: High fruit set requires rigorous thinning to prevent biennial bearing
Pest Management: Highly resistant to canker; watch for anthracnose in young trees in humid regions
Harvest Season:
Early November to early December – with fruit capable of being stored at room temperature until mid-February for Spring Festival market access. A premium late-autumn variety that delivers superior sweetness, striking appearance, and outstanding storage life for fresh market sales, gift packaging, and e-commerce logistics.
