Product Introduction

Product Name: Golden Armor Mandarin (Tianfu Golden Armor)

Description:
Golden Armor, also known as Tianfu Golden Armor, is a premium late-season spring mandarin variety newly developed and introduced to the market. It was officially unveiled by Shuifa Yingguo (Sichuan) Agricultural Industry Development Co., Ltd. at the 6th Late-Season Citrus Festival in Meishan, Sichuan, in March 2023, where it quickly gained recognition as one of the most popular new products at the event. According to nursery promotion materials, this variety is a hybrid of Golden Tribute Pomelo and Ehime, sharing a sister lineage with the promising “Ga Beng Cui” variety.

A Citrus That Delivers Two Flavors in One:

Golden Armor is celebrated for its unique combination of tangerine freshness and pomelo fragrance – a distinctive sensory experience that allows consumers to enjoy two fruit flavors in a single bite. The flesh is crisp, tender, and melting (化渣) , with abundant juice and a clean, residue-free texture. The flavor profile is described as sweet-tart and refreshing, with a natural pomelo aroma that lingers pleasantly.

Appearance:
The fruit is flat-round with a thin, orange-yellow to golden-yellow skin. The flesh is orange-colored, soft yet crisp, and juicy. Average fruit weight is approximately 150g or more, with reference to the closely related Golden Tangerine variety suggesting sizes up to 300g. The fruit is seedless or nearly seedless, adding to its convenience.

Flavor & Sweetness:
Golden Armor delivers exceptional sweetness, with sugar content reaching over 20° Brix at full maturity, approximately 15° Brix at initial ripening, and 13° Brix during the de-acidification period in late October – placing it among the higher-sugar citrus varieties available. The flavor is a balanced sweet-tart profile, with some channel partners noting it is "more tart than sweet" – best suited for consumers who appreciate a refreshing citrus tang.

Key Commercial Advantages:

  • Unique Pomelo-Tangerine Flavor – A distinctive dual-flavor experience that sets it apart from ordinary mandarins

  • High Sugar Content – Up to 20° Brix for intense natural sweetness

  • Cold Hardy – Marketed as a cold-tolerant variety suitable for cultivation in regions where frost occurs before harvest

  • Crack Resistant – No fruit cracking, reducing commercial losses

  • Effortless Cultivation – No flower or fruit thinning treatments required; strong disease resistance and simple management

  • Exceptional Natural Storage Life – Stores at room temperature for up to 6 months (until May of the following year) without refrigeration, maintaining flavor and texture while continuing to accumulate sugar – ideal for e-commerce and long-distance logistics

  • High Yield – Reference sister variety yields 80–100 jin per tree

Growing Regions:
The variety was first introduced in Meishan, Sichuan, a region uniquely suited to late-season citrus production with its mild winters and warm springs. It has also been trialed in Anhui and other northern citrus fringe areas, where it matures in December and performs well as a cold-hardy option. Meishan currently has 1.06 million mu of late-season citrus production, with Golden Armor positioned as one of the newest premium varieties in this category.

Cultivation Notes:

  • Variety Origin: Hybrid of Golden Tribute Pomelo × Ehime; sister lineage with "Ga Beng Cui" and "Ningxia Mandarin"

  • Cold Tolerance: Suitable for regions where harvest can be completed before frost; matures in December in Anhui

  • Management: No fruit-setting treatments required; strong disease resistance and simple management

  • Propagation: Grafting is the standard method for improved cold hardiness and yield

  • Harvest Timing: Main season November; northern regions December

Harvest Season:
November to December – a premium late-season spring mandarin that captures the winter citrus market. With its unique pomelo-tangerine flavor, high sugar content, and exceptional natural storage life of up to 6 months without refrigeration, Golden Armor offers growers a highly differentiated product with strong potential for e-commerce and extended market supply.
