Bred by the Dalian Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1963 through crossing "Napoleon" and "Huangyu", this variety was officially named in 1973 and has since become the benchmark of China's domestic cherry industry. Today, “Hongdeng” is a name consumers across China associate with “premium domestic cherries”.

Named for its brilliant red color resembling a traffic light or red lantern, Hongdeng cherries are striking on the shelf. The fruit is kidney-shaped to broad heart-shaped, with a glossy, bright red to purplish-red skin that looks like it's been polished with wax.
