Product Introduction
Oxheart is a classic heirloom carrot of the Chantenay type. The roots are short-conic or heart-shaped, about 7–9 cm long with a shoulder diameter of 5–6.5 cm. The flesh is medium orange with a slightly yellower core. It tolerates shallow or heavier soils better than most varieties, making it an excellent choice for container gardens and home plots. Individual roots can weigh over 1 pound (about 450 g). Good quality, suitable for fresh eating, soups and roasting
Soil: Loose, well-drained sandy loam or loam. Oxheart tolerates heavier soils better than most carrots, but deep tillage still benefits root development.
Sowing: Cover seeds about ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep, row spacing 9–16 inches. Germination at 45–85°F, emergence in 6–21 days.
Thinning: Thin when 2–3 true leaves appear, final spacing 1–3 inches.
Water & Fertilizer: Low fertilizer needs. Avoid excess nitrogen which promotes foliage over roots. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
Harvest: About 80–90 days from sowing. Individual roots can exceed 1 pound.
