Product Introduction

Product Name: Ponkan Mandarin (Chinese Honey Orange)

Description:
Ponkan, also known as Chinese Honey Orange or Nagpur Suntara in India, is one of the most widely cultivated mandarin varieties in the world, with major production in China, India, Brazil, and Taiwan. It originated in central India and was introduced to southern China during the Tang Dynasty, later spreading to Taiwan in 1775. Today, China is the primary producer, with renowned production regions in Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, Zhejiang (Quzhou – "China's Ponkan Hometown"), and Taiwan.

A Mandarin That Defines Convenience and Flavor:

The defining feature of Ponkan is its remarkably loose, easy-to-peel rind. The name “椪” itself comes from the Cantonese and Fujian dialect meaning “loose skin” or “hollow,” describing how the rind naturally separates from the flesh at maturity, creating a soft, yielding feel when pressed. This makes Ponkan one of the most convenient mandarins for fresh consumption.

Appearance:
The fruit is oblate to high-oblate, with a broad, flat top and a distinctive short neck at the stem end. The rind is orange-yellow to orange-red, glossy and medium-thick, with prominent oil cells giving it a slightly pebbled texture. Inside, the flesh is deep orange, tender, and melting (化渣) , divided into 9–12 segments with a hollow central axis. Average fruit weight is 120–160g, with premium varieties reaching 230g or more.

Flavor & Sweetness:
Ponkan delivers an exceptionally rich, sweet flavor with a pleasant aroma. Soluble solids content reaches 11–13% Brix, with acidity of 0.5–0.6%, creating a well-balanced sweet-tart profile. The flesh is juicy, crisp, and melting, with a clean, refreshing finish. Early-season green-skin Ponkan (harvested October–November) offers a tangy-sweet flavor, while fully ripened fruit (November onward) develops a balanced, mellow sweetness that improves with storage.

Nutritional & Medicinal Value:
Ponkan is rich in Vitamin C (30mg per 100ml juice) and dietary fiber. The peel contains essential oils and is used in traditional medicine as an aromatic stomachic and expectorant. The fruit is valued for its appetite-stimulating, qi-regulating, and lung-moistening properties. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is used to relieve thirst, heat, and alcohol intoxication.

Key Commercial Advantages:

  • Loose, Easy-to-Peel Rind – One of the most convenient mandarins for fresh consumption

  • Rich, Sweet Flavor – 11–13% Brix with balanced acidity and a pleasant aroma

  • Excellent Storage Life – Stores well through the Spring Festival and into the following spring

  • Extended Supply Window – Green-skin Ponkan from October, fully ripened fruit from November, late-season varieties extending to May the following year

  • Wide Adaptability – Thrives in tropical and subtropical regions with annual average temperatures above 18°C

  • High Yield – Vigorous, productive trees with strong commercial value

  • Versatile Processing – Excellent for fresh eating, juice, wine, vinegar, preserves, and jam

Growing Regions:
Ponkan is successfully cultivated across Fujian (southern region), Guangdong (eastern region), Taiwan, Hunan (western region – renowned for premium quality), Zhejiang (Quzhou – the “China Ponkan Hometown”), Jiangxi, Guangxi, Sichuan, and Chongqing. In Taiwan, major production areas include Yunlin, Chiayi, Taichung (Dongshi), and Miaoli (Zhuolan), with the central Taiwan region historically producing the highest-quality fruit.

Cultivation Notes:

  • Climate: Optimal growth at 20–22°C annual average temperature; tolerant to -9°C to -8°C but sensitive to prolonged cold

  • Site Selection: Deep soil (over 1m), organic matter >1.5%, pH 5.5–6.5; south-, east-, or southeast-facing slopes below 600m elevation

  • Rootstock: Sour orange, small-leaf trifoliate orange, or Jiangxi red tangerine are recommended

  • Planting Density: 150 trees/mu at 1.5m×3m for intensive planting; or 5.0m×2.0m for standard orchards

  • Planting Time: September–November or February–March

  • Pruning: Train to a dwarf, open-center canopy; retain as many leaves as possible on fruiting trees; remove overlapping, clustered, and diseased branches; renew fruiting wood annually

  • Harvest Timing: Pick at maturity to prevent quality loss and rind puffing

  • Key Threat: Huanglongbing (citrus greening disease) is the primary production risk

Harvest Season:
October to December (main season) – with green-skin Ponkan available from October, fully ripened fruit from November, and late-season varieties extending supply through May the following year. A premium autumn-winter mandarin that delivers unmatched peeling convenience, rich sweet flavor, and exceptional storage life for fresh market sales, gift packaging, e-commerce logistics, and processing applications
