Product Introduction

Product Name: Toyo No Hikari Mandarin (Dongyang Zhiguang)

Description:
Toyo No Hikari is a premium late-season hybrid mandarin variety developed by Japanese citrus breeding experts from a cross of Kanpei and grapefruit. It represents a significant breakthrough in citrus breeding – inheriting the exceptional sweetness, crisp texture, and rich flavor of Kanpei while overcoming its critical weaknesses, including susceptibility to fruit cracking and drying out.

A Citrus That Solves Kanpei's Fatal Flaws:

Kanpei, known as the "Queen of Citrus," is celebrated for its high sugar content (14-16°Brix) and beautiful flat-round shape, but it suffers from two devastating problems: a cracking rate of up to 50% under poor management, and a tendency to dry out (枯水) during storage, severely reducing its commercial value. Toyo No Hikari inherits Kanpei's best traits while incorporating grapefruit's large fruit size, crack resistance, abundant juice, and long tree-holding capacity – creating a superior variety that delivers on every front.

Appearance:
The fruit is flat-round and exceptionally large, weighing 400-500 grams on average, with premium specimens exceeding 750 grams. When fully ripe, the skin turns a vibrant, glossy red that is visually stunning. The peel is thin and easy to remove, and the segments separate readily. A distinctive "navel-like" mark at the bottom serves as an authenticity identifier.

Flavor & Sweetness:
The flesh is orange-yellow, fine-textured, and crisp, with excellent melting quality and abundant juice. It is described as having a superior taste to Kanpei itself. Sugar content is exceptional: 15°Brix at initial ripening in late November, rising to 16-17°Brix by the Spring Festival, and peaking at 18-20°Brix when left on the tree until May.

Key Commercial Advantages:

  • Crack-Resistant – Overcomes Kanpei's fatal flaw of up to 50% cracking

  • No Drying Out – Retains juice and quality during extended storage, unlike Kanpei

  • Extra-Large Fruit – 400-500g average, up to 750g+ – an impressive premium gifting size

  • Extremely Late Season – Matures in March, with fruit holdable on the tree until May for extended market supply

  • Exceptional Sweetness – Up to 20°Brix when fully mature

  • High Yield – Over 6,000 jin per mu

  • Cold Tolerance – Withstands temperatures down to -7°C to -8°C

  • Excellent Storage & Transport – Long tree-holding time and durable fruit make it ideal for e-commerce and long-distance logistics

Growing Regions:
Native to Japan, Toyo No Hikari is suitable for cultivation in regions capable of growing late-maturing citrus varieties, including the Yangtze River basin and areas with similar climates. It is best suited for frost-free regions or protected cultivation (greenhouses) to maximize its late-season potential.

Note on Variety Identity:
Toyo No Hikari is not the same as Ehime 49 despite some market confusion. The distinctive navel-like mark at the bottom of the fruit serves as a reliable identifier for authenticity. It is also sometimes called "Oriental Light," "Dongyang Zhiguang," or "Son of Kanpei" in different markets.

Harvest Season:
March onwards – a premium extra-late-season mandarin that fills the spring citrus gap. With its exceptional sugar content, crack resistance, and extended tree-holding capability, Toyo No Hikari offers growers a unique opportunity to supply high-quality fresh citrus when few other options are available.
