Product Introduction

Product Name: Yuhuan Wendan Pomelo (Chumen Wendan)

Description:
Yuhuan Wendan Pomelo, also known as Chumen Wendan or Yuhuan Pomelo, is a premium pomelo variety originating from Yuhuan City, Zhejiang Province, China. First introduced from Zhangzhou, Fujian in 1897 and refined through generations of grafting and selection, this variety has been cultivated for over 140 years and is recognized as a National Geographical Indication Product (registered in 2018). It has earned the prestigious title of "China's No.1 Pomelo" and holds an unprecedented "nine consecutive championships" in national pomelo quality competitions.

A Pomelo That Defines Excellence:

The defining feature of Yuhuan Wendan is its exceptional eating quality – the flesh is crystal-clear, tender, and bursting with juice, with a perfectly balanced sweet-tart flavor and a clean, residue-free texture (脆而无渣) . Soluble solids content reaches ≥11.0%, total sugar ≥10.5g/100g, and vitamin C ≥50mg/100g. In favorable years, sugar content can exceed 12 Brix, delivering an even sweeter, more aromatic experience.

Appearance:
The fruit is flat-round to high-flat-round, with a distinctive shape – the bottom is flat or slightly concave, while the stem end protrudes. The skin is bright orange-yellow, smooth, with fine oil cells and a pleasant fragrance. Each fruit is impressively large, averaging 1,500 grams (1.5kg) and reaching up to 2,500 grams (2.5kg) – a true standout for gifting and premium display.

Nutritional & Processing Value:
Yuhuan Wendan contains 14 types of amino acids and essential trace minerals. The edible rate is ≥60%. Beyond fresh eating, the fruit offers exceptional processing versatility: the flesh can be made into pure natural juice without preservatives; the peel yields limonin, pectin, preserved fruit, jam, and aromatic oil. Value-added products include Wendan pastries, Wendan beer, Wendan essential oil, and Wendan-themed cultural products, with the full industry chain reaching ¥506 million in annual output value.

Key Commercial Advantages:

  • Champion Quality – "Nine consecutive championships" in national pomelo competitions

  • National Geographical Indication Product – Protected origin and brand recognition

  • Extra-Large Fruit – 1.5–2.5kg average, ideal for premium gifting

  • Superior Eating Quality – Crystal-clear, tender, sweet-tart, and residue-free

  • Exceptional Processing Value – Juice, peel products, essential oil, and cultural merchandise

  • Strong Export Track Record – Exported to Canada, Europe, America, and Southeast Asia

  • Extended Supply Window – Early variety from early September; main season from late October through January–February

Growing Regions:
Native to Yuhuan City, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, the core production area is concentrated on the Chumen Peninsula, including Chumen Town, Qinggang Town, Yucheng, Lupu, and Chenyu, on coastal tidal flats and lower hillsides. The region's subtropical maritime monsoon climate – with an average annual temperature of 17.6°C, annual rainfall of 1,450mm, and 2,52 frost-free days – provides ideal conditions for premium fruit production.

Cultivation Notes:

  • Climate & Soil: Requires annual average temperature above 17°C, rainfall above 1,000mm, and well-drained slightly acidic to neutral sandy loam; salt-alkali tolerant, suitable for coastal cultivation

  • Rootstock: Tuluan (土栾) rootstock grafting is the standard practice

  • Fertilization: 3–4 applications per year for mature trees; core techniques include heavy winter and organic fertilization, omission of fruit-swelling fertilizer, and additional flower-bud and fruit-set fertilizers

  • Pruning: Key technique is "removing large branches to open the canopy (开天窗) while preserving lower and inner branches" ; young trees require bud-rubbing and shoot control following the principle of "remove early, keep late; remove few, keep many"

  • Fruit Management: Timely flower thinning at bud stage and fruit thinning combined with nutrient solution spraying effectively improve yield, quality, and reduce cracking

  • Key Threat: Huanglongbing (citrus greening disease) is the primary industry threat; refer to T/ZLX 072-2023 Green Food Production Technical Regulations for comprehensive management

Harvest Season:
Early September (early-maturing varieties) / Late October (main season). A premium autumn-winter pomelo that captures the Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, and Spring Festival gift markets with its extraordinary size, champion quality, and prestigious brand heritage. With proper storage, fresh supply can extend through January–February of the following year, ensuring a strong and sustained market presence.
